What you can do to keep you and your pet safe.

Your dogs bed could be harbouring some nasty surprises. Your dog may look cosy but your little friends bed could be harbouring thousands of microorganisms including parasites, bacteria, viruses and fungi.

Common signs of infestation are a foul smell, lethargy, continued scratching, visible rashes, sores, red spots or fungal infections, among other symptoms. Read on to discover how to make your pets bed clean and safe for good from these common infestations.

External Parasites

Your dog may catch fleas or mites from other animals. It’s not just your dog that may bring these into your home. “Fleas can hitch a ride into your home on your pant leg or shoe,” says Dr. Jeffrey Stupine, head veterinarian at the Pennsylvania SPCA. “If you get little red spots on your ankles or your pet is scratching, it’s probably fleas. If you have an infestation, there may be invisible larvae waiting to hatch in your dog’s bedding.”

The mites that cause sarcoptic mange, can live for a day or more off their host and in the environment, like your dog’s bed!.

Symptoms: Sarcoptic mange mites can cause scabies in people.

“Ringworm is not actually a worm, it’s a fungal infection. It is medically known as dermatophytosis, that infects a dog’s skin, hair and claws and gets its name from the round, pink lesion it forms on the skin [in people],” says Dr. Daniel Morris, a veterinary dermatologist.

Ringworm spores shed by a dog can live in the environment—including his bedding—for up to two years. If left untreated, the fungal infection can spread and infect other animals or humans living in your home.

Symptoms: Redness, itching, hair loss, crusty patches and brittle claws.

Roundworms and Hookworms

Roundworms are parasites that live in dogs intestines. These parasites feed off of partially digested intestinal contents. According to the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) many infected dogs shed roundworm eggs in their feces. Your dog may get hookworm from eating contaminated soil or infected prey animals, larvae may burrow through the skin, or puppies may contract hookworms from their mothers.

Symptoms: Diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, dull hair, coughing and a potbellied appearance. If your dog is infected with roundworms, his bedding may contain invisible eggs.

Salmonella and Listeria

People usually associate Salmonella and Listeria with human food-borne illnesses but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has found that 25 percent of commercial raw dog food tested positive for the bacteria.

According to the CDC, dogs can carry the harmful bacteria in their intestines without showing signs of illness and expose humans in the household to the same. To avoid the risk, the CDC recommends cleaning all surfaces, including bedding, on a regular basis, washing your hands thoroughly, safely storing and handling raw pet food.

Getting rid of existing issues

Remove and wash any covers first, then spray the bed with a solution made from half a pint of water, a dozen drops of your favourite essential oil and a couple of teaspoons of baking soda, then hang outside to dry naturally. This should eliminate most of the current visitors, but it won't prevent them from returning over time.

Solving the problem once and for all

To be sure you don't get a repeat visit, you need an anti-bacterial bed, ideally organic. Chemical exposure isn't a great idea for most pets and many anti-bacterial beds contain chemicals.

There are a lot of anti-bacterial beds on the market. The Prima bed solves this problem once and for all. It's made from organic materials and SILVERPLUS is used in hospitals for it's anti microbial effect. We use a BIONIC costing to make it stain and odor resistant too.

Not only is it safe, it's stylish and durable too and you can machine wash it at 40°C to ensure effective bacteria protection.

A trip to the vet is a LOT more expensive (and less comfortable and beautiful) than our Prima bed, designed specifically to keep your dog and family (and bank balance) safe from those nasty critters and your home free from foul doggy smells thanks to it's stain resistance, even to oil!
